What is Parkinson’s Disease?

Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative condition affecting an estimated 30,000 people in northeast Ohio. Approximately 60,000 Americans are diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease each year, and this number does not reflect the thousands of cases that go undetected. While a definitive number of people living with PD in Northeast Ohio is lacking, estimates range from 25,000 – 35,000.

There is no cure for Parkinson’s disease but exercise acts as a powerful complement to drug and surgical interventions. Regular exercise that has been designed specifically for people with PD can help improve flexibility, balance, coordination, agility, gait, posture, flexibility, and strength, and may positively impact depression, anxiety, and cognition. Some studies suggest that exercise may help delay some of the common symptoms of the disease, helping people with PD maintain their physical capabilities as well as their quality of life.
